39th Annual AAH Conference & Bookfair

We welcome proposals for sessions that address the widest possible range of art-historical topics, including architectural and design histories. The 2013 conference aims to represent the interests of an expansive art-historical community by covering all branches of its discipline/s and the range of its visual cultures. We therefore welcome proposals from across a broad chronological range (from prehistory onwards) and a wide geographical one. We would also like to encourage convenors to propose sessions that address topics of methodological, historiographical, or interdisciplinary interest as well as ones that open up debates about the future of the discipline/s.

Contemporary Vernaculars: Places, Processes and Manifestations

ISVS aims to promote awareness and research on vernacular traditions by organizing seminars focused on important aspects of vernacular every two years in specifically chosen places across the globe. The last seminar, ISVS-5 held in Colombo, Sri Lanka focused on Vernacular Futures provided a great opportunity to explore the future of the vernacular traditions resulting in a suggestion that the survival and continuity of vernacular traditions may lie in ordinary informal buildings which are usually not regarded as vernacular. Building upon this insight, ISVS-6 in 2012 is delighted to lead the debate on vernacular traditions of contemporary societies and their building and settlement forms which display the same characteristics of the conventionally conceptualized ‘vernacular’. This does not mean that the ‘historical vernacular’ is out of the conference scope. Instead juxtaposition of ‘historical vernacular’ and the ‘contemporary vernacular’ is expected to be explored in such a way that the nuances of their makings, and relevance in today’s world could be understood thoroughly.

Low Countries, Big Cities

For the first time in human history, more people live in an urban environment than in a rural one. Cities are big and getting bigger. Cities have played a crucial role in the history of the Low Countries as places of encounter, exchange, protest and revolution. The city is a place of contrast: new trends emerge in a setting infused with history. Cities are often either celebrated as liberal, free spirited, worldly hybrids, or dismissed as locations of tension, lacking in morals and traditional values. Cities are places of linguistic innovation: new linguistic features emerge, indeed new urban vernaculars, of which Polder Dutch is a prominent example in the Low Countries. In art, representations of cities—and their related concerns—constitute some the most potent and thought-provoking images produced in the modern era.

Dickens and the Visual Imagination

Диккенс на фотографии Джеремайи Гёрни во время нью-йоркской поездки 1867—1868 гг

Dickens is renowned for the richness of his visual imagination and his publications encouraged readers to interpret his words with and through their accompanying illustrations. Not only was Dickens deeply engaged with ideas of the visual in his writing, but his work has also provoked responses from artists across multiple disciplines within the Victorian period and beyond. The conference seeks to build on recent interdisciplinary work (such as that of Kate Flint and Isobel Armstrong) that illuminates nineteenth-century understandings of visual culture. By focussing the conference through a writer whose work is embedded in the visual imagination, Dickens will provide a test case for examining and theorising the connection between text and image across two hundred years of cultural history.

Ethno-Religious Diversity and Cultural Innovation in the Medieval Mediterranean

The aim of this workshop is to examine the nature of cultural development and socio-economic relations vis-à-vis ethno-religious diversity in the period roughly from 600–1500CE. In doing so we hope not only to address various aspects of medieval cultural transmission and innovation, but to bring into relief the processes of acculturation and exchange, manifested within both antagonistic and collaborative contexts. This will not only help to illuminate the role of ethno-religious diversity and cultural creation in the Medieval Mediterranean, but also their role in the emergence of Modernity and their place in the modern world.
