Insular Cultures

Mary Clayton

The conference theme is “Insular Cultures”, interpreted very broadly. The focus will be on relations between Anglo-Saxon England and Ireland in the early Middle Ages but we also welcome papers on relations between the Anglo-Saxons, their other Celtic neighbours and their non-Celtic neighbours. Related topics, such as continental influence on insular cultures and relations with Iceland, will also be included.Papers on other topics are also most welcome.

Mortality and Imagination: the Life of the Dead in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance

In an effort to facilitate a wide-ranging, interdisciplinary conversation, we encourage scholars working in any discipline to submit abstracts addressing this theme. A selection of the papers presented at the conference will be published in a special issue of the Southern African Journal of Medieval and Renaissance Studies (accredited for South African research subsidy purposes).

Ethno-Religious Diversity and Cultural Innovation in the Medieval Mediterranean

The aim of this workshop is to examine the nature of cultural development and socio-economic relations vis-à-vis ethno-religious diversity in the period roughly from 600–1500CE. In doing so we hope not only to address various aspects of medieval cultural transmission and innovation, but to bring into relief the processes of acculturation and exchange, manifested within both antagonistic and collaborative contexts. This will not only help to illuminate the role of ethno-religious diversity and cultural creation in the Medieval Mediterranean, but also their role in the emergence of Modernity and their place in the modern world.
