CFP “The Nomadism of Social Anthropologists” Midterm Conference of the Europeanist Network of the European Association of Social Anthropologists (EASA) – jointly held with the Border Crossings Network 26-27th of April 2013, Bucharest, Romania

While anthropologists of the past decades have devoted increasing attention both to questions of reflexivity and to people “on the move” such as migrants, relatively little attention has focused on the geographical and cultural movement of social anthropologists themselves, especially since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Even if there is growing interest in non-hegemonic anthropologies by scholars who have often lived in several countries (esp.

Cultural Challenges of Migration in Canada

Migration is a factor, which has played a central role in the construction of a Canadian identity. Concepts such as multiculturalism, interculturalism and transculturalism are inextricably linked with phenomena pertaining to migration, and the effects of these phenomena have made themselves felt in Canada’s cultural dynamics. The question therefore arises as to which processes and channels of communication have been instrumental in transmitting these migratory dynamics, and in which form they have manifested themselves in Canadian everyday life and culture. What are the cultural challenges of migration in Canada in the context of “globalization”? Which are the areas where a specific cultural dimension has arisen which, in its turn, has acquired a model character within the global sphere linked to the knowledge-based society? Papers to be read at the symposium should address these questions with regard not only to scientific and popular media and communication, language and literature, music and the visual arts, but also to social and political sciences.

Storytelling: Global Reflections on Narrative

Michna Palace

Human life is conducted through story, which comes naturally to us. Sharing stories is arguably the most important way we have of communicating with others about who we are and what we believe; about what we are doing and have done; about our hopes and fears; about what we value and what we don’t. We learn about and make sense of our lives by telling the stories that we live; and we learn about other lives by listening to the stories told by others. Sometimes, under the influence of the culture in which we are immersed, we live our lives in ways that try to create the stories we want to be able to tell about them.

IDENTITY, CULTURE & COMMUNICATION

In the “Saturated Self”, Kenneth Gergen responds to globalization and the ballyhooed “communications revolution” by coining the term “multiphrenia”; this neologism accounts for “the splitting of the individual into a multiplicity of self-investments”. On this theorization, new technologies have saturated the subject in multiple competing paradigms, values, ways of life, modes of communicating, ideologies, and technological substrates. Without undue nostalgia, we may posit the subject not as a stable monad – but as a malleable conglomerate of relationships in an online and offline socio-cultural milieu with some new (and not so new) ideological and material concomitants.
The objective of this international and cross-disciplinary conference is to investigate the overarching concepts of identity, culture and communication as well as the relationships among them. Some orienting questions: What ideologies and their associated subjectivities have been enabled (or transmutated) by globalization and the “communications revolution”? How is the subject represented on screen and in new media – and to what effect? Has space been cleared for a revival of social class in discussions of identity? As globalization plays out, what is the relation between Self and Other, between Us and Them? How do scholars move beyond 1990s concepts of identity and identity politics? What is the place of agency?

Relationships between Diasporas and Their 'Homelands' and Their Impact on the State, National Identities, and Peace & Conflict

The conference organizers encourage the presentation of papers on the increasingly systematic and intense relationships between Diaspora communities and their communities of origin. What are the emerging patterns in this new development and what are their basic features? What are the most appropriate theoretical concepts and structures that best describe and analyze these new patterns (e.g., transnationalism, cosmopolitanism, etc.)? Are second- and third-generation migrants implicated in these new developments? If yes, what are the character and the extent of this involvement? Participants are encouraged to pay special attention to the role of diasporic associations (hometown associations, political groups, charitable and village associations, religious groups and institutions, etc.) and their homeland counterparts, as well as the states of the sending (homeland) countries and their agencies abroad (e.g., embassies and consulates).

Arts and aesthetics in a globalising world

Jawaharlal Nehru

3rd-6th April 2012, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India

Every five years or so, the Association of Social Anthropologists of the UK and Commonwealth (ASA) tries to hold its annual conference outside the UK, in a Commonwealth country. The aim is to widen the possiblities for participation by Commonwealth colleagues. The ASA is happy to announce that it will hold its 2012 conference in India for the first time. The ASA is happily working together with colleagues at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems in the School of Social Sciences, and the School of Arts and Aesthetics, at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi. The conference aims to attract approximately 200 delegates with its plenary stream and parallel panel sessions, with colleagues coming from all over the world, but particularly from across India and South Asia. We extend a warm invitation to Indian colleagues through JNU's good connections beyond the capital, and through the various learned societies, including the Indian Anthropological Association (IAA), and the Indian Anthropological Society (IAS).

Evolving Humanity, Emerging Worlds

The congress will be held in the city of Manchester, United Kingdom, from Monday, August 5 to Saturday, August 10, 2013, hosted by the University of Manchester with the support of Manchester City Council. This is the first world congress to be held in Britain since the first meeting of the International Congress of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences was held in London in 1934. The Congress Agenda is being planned by a UK Organizing Committee which includes anthropologists working in all sub-fields of the discipline. We are proud to have the privilege of organizing what we hope will be a truly memorable event.
